ABOUT THE GRAND PORTER

The Grand Porter began with a simple conviction: Breakfast and Lunch Matter.
Not as a prelude to dinner.

Not as something rushed through. But as meals worth showing up for.

Detroit has no shortage of ambitious dinner restaurants. What we think it needs more of, are places that take the daytime seriously. Thoughtful food. Excellent coffee. Baked goods made with intention. Rooms that feel good to spend time in, whether you’re here for ten minutes or two hours.

Our home sits at 3620 Porter Street, stitched together from two buildings that once lived separate lives. One was a quirky, beloved neighborhood candy shop. The other, a 19th-century house built in 1894—the same year as Café Sous Terre, our first restaurant, just a few miles away. We liked that coincidence. Two houses, built the same year, now carrying the same belief: that good food and drink are most meaningful when they’re woven into daily life.

At The Grand Porter, we focus on deeply satisfying breakfast and lunch fare, pastries made in-house, and coffee that respects both craft and consistency. You’ll see familiar things done carefully, and a few surprises that feel natural rather than forced. Everything is designed to hold up to repetition—because the best compliment isn’t a photo, it’s a habit.

This is a restaurant built for the daytime, for the neighborhood, and for the long run. We hope it becomes part of your routine.
