About the Cafe

What kind of restaurant is The Grand Porter?

The Grand Porter is an intimate all-day cafe and bakery focused on seasonal breakfast and lunch. We serve house-made pastries, egg dishes, sandwiches, salads, and specialty coffee in a bright, Belgian farmhouse-inspired setting.

Is The Grand Porter a new restaurant?

Yes. We opened on December 16, 2025. The cafe occupies a Victorian-era home built in 1894, combined with the adjacent former Sweet D's candy shop storefront next door.

Who designed The Grand Porter?

The interior was designed by Rebecca Priester of Rebecca Priester Design.

Who is the chef at The Grand Porter?

Our Executive Chef is Lou Hammer.  The menu is intentionally small and seasonal, and it changes as ingredients come in and out of season.

Is The Grand Porter related to Cafe Sous Terre?

Yes. The Grand Porter and Cafe Sous Terre are sister restaurants under the same owner. Our coffee is roasted by Cafe Sous Terre, and our kitchen supplies much of the fresh food you see on Sous Terre's menu.

What is the history of the building?

The Grand Porter occupies a Victorian-era home built in 1894, combined with the adjacent brick-storefront retail building that most recently housed Sweet D's candy shop.

Menu, Food & Drinks

What kind of food does The Grand Porter serve?

We serve a seasonal breakfast and lunch menu that is very vegetarian- and vegan-friendly without being exclusively plant-based. Signature items include our Root Vegetable Hash, Egg Sandwich on brioche with gruyère and togarashi mayo, Avocado Toast, Strawberry Matcha Parfait, Breakfast Burrito, Jambon-Beurre, Turkey Melt, a fully vegan Bánh Mì, a BLT, Citrus Salad, and a caramelized French Onion Dip.

What are your most popular menu items?

Our best-sellers are the Root Vegetable Hash, the Egg Sandwich, the Jambon-Beurre, the Turkey Melt, and the Breakfast Burrito (these are the asterisked items on our menu). Axios Detroit specifically called out the passion fruit bun ($5.50) and the oat latte ($5.25) in their April 2026 review.

Is breakfast served all day?

Yes. Everything on the menu — breakfast and lunch alike — is available any time we are open (8:00 AM to 3:00 PM, daily). You can order a Root Vegetable Hash at 2:00 PM or a Turkey Melt at 9:00 AM.

Do you sell pastries?

Yes. We run a daily in-house pastry program.  Selections rotate and can include viennoiserie, seasonal buns (Axios called out the passion fruit bun), cookies, and bakery-case specials — earlier visits give you the best selection before items sell out.

What kind of coffee do you serve?

We serve drip coffee, espresso, cortado, cappuccino, latte, Americano, matcha, a house-made chai, hot chocolate, and a rotating loose-leaf tea program. All of our coffee is roasted by our sister cafe, Cafe Sous Terre, in Midtown Detroit.

Do you serve alcohol?

No. The Grand Porter does not currently hold a liquor license, so we do not serve beer, wine, or cocktails. For a cocktail or glass of wine, visit our sister location Cafe Sous Terre in Midtown Detroit.

Do you have fresh juice?

Yes. We serve orange juice, orange and beet juice, pineapple kale juice, and apple juice, sourced from local juicers and priced between $4 and $7. We also carry bottled and canned non-alcoholic drinks.

Dietary Accommodations

Is The Grand Porter vegetarian-friendly?

Yes. A large portion of our menu is vegetarian or easily modified to be vegetarian — including the Avocado Toast, Strawberry Matcha Parfait, Citrus Salad, French Onion Dip, and vegetarian versions of the Turkey Melt (with wild mushrooms), BLT (with avocado), and Breakfast Burrito (with extra veggies).

Do you have vegan options?

Yes. Our Bánh Mì with fried wild mushrooms, pecan paté, citrus slaw, and vegan spicy mayo is a fully vegan menu item. Several other dishes — including the Avocado Toast and the Root Vegetable Hash — have vegan modifications, and oat milk is available for any coffee or tea drink.

Do you have gluten-free options?

Many of our sides, salads, and egg dishes are naturally gluten-free, and we can often substitute toast.  Because we bake pastries and breads on-site, we are not a dedicated gluten-free kitchen, so guests with celiac disease should let us know so our team can guide you through the safest choices.

Do you label allergens on the menu?

Yes. Items containing nuts (for example the Strawberry Matcha Parfait and the vegan Bánh Mì) and sesame (the Citrus Salad) are flagged directly on the menu. If you have a specific allergy, tell our staff and we will walk you through safe options.

Reservations, Seating & Groups

Do I need a reservation at The Grand Porter?

No. We are a walk-in-only cafe with about 30 indoor seats. During weekend brunch hours there can be a short wait — coming in before 10:00 AM or after 1:00 PM is typically the easiest way to get a table right away.

How many people can you seat?

The cafe currently seats approximately 30 guests indoors, including a big community-style table near the front where neighbors often end up chatting with strangers.

Can I host a private event at The Grand Porter?

Can I bring a large group?

Groups of up to about 8–10 can usually be accommodated during off-peak hours — typically weekdays between 10:00 AM and noon, or after 1:30 PM. Please call ahead at (313) 395-2761 so we can prepare the space.
